Scripture: Proverbs 28:26, NKJV and Judges 21:25, NKJV
“He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered.” (Proverbs 28:26, NKJV)
“In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25, NKJV)
Our point of reference is critical in becoming a CONVERTERLATOR. The above verses summarize what is wrong in our world: People refuse to acknowledge God and instead trust in their own hearts.
To do so is to make oneself a fool. People do whatever they think is right in their own eyes. They think that no one, including God, is going to tell them what to do. We see the evidence of this foolishness on the evening news.
Many Christians drift away from their mission. They fail to do what the Psalmist did: “I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.” (Psalm 16:8, NKJV)
Many have fallen into the trap of the CONSUMERLATOR and follow the world and its wisdom. “However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.” (1 Corinthians 2:6, NKJV)
Or because of the peer pressure of the crowd, they lose sight of the Lord. “And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.” (Luke 19:3, NKJV)
So what is the proper point of reference for us to look for guidance?
Our point of reference is the person of Jesus Christ: “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.” (Hebrews 3:1, NIV)
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1–2, NIV)
The key concepts for us are to “fix our thoughts on Jesus” and “fix our eyes on Jesus.” Practice doing this and the needle of our life compass will point to the true reference point—Jesus!
Today, ask yourself:
How am I making sure not to drift from my mission in my own life? Where are my thoughts and eyes truly fixed?
