26. Thriving in a World of Spiritual Drought

The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones; you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. (Isaiah 58:11, NKJV)

As we look at our world, we see a spiritual desert. However, God has made provision for us to experience spiritual springs of water!

How does he satisfy our soul in drought? He does it through his Word and through the Holy Spirit.

Scripture reminds us of the necessity of satisfying our soul on the Word of God: “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3, NKJV).

Psalm 107 reminds us: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, and his loyal love endures. Let those delivered by the Lord speak out, those whom he deliveredfrom the powerof the enemy … They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion. They cried out to the Lord in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles … Let them give thanks to the Lord for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people. For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food” (vv. 1–2, 5–6, 8–9).

And Paul reminds us to put our focus on the Lord Jesus Christ: “I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, will give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him,—since the eyes of your heart have been enlightened—so that you can know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense strength” (Ephesians 1:17–19).

As we practice strengthening ourselves in the Word and depend on the Holy Spirit, we will be like a watered garden, an oasis in the middle of the desert. Son Power will flow through us, making us like a spring whose waters do not fail.

Today, ask yourself:

In what ways am I looking to God to satisfy my thirsty soul?
