May all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength. (Judges 5:31)
Think of the sun when it rises in its strength. We can feel it’s warm and comforting presence. It provides light so we can see where we are going. It shines consistently and constantly even when hidden by clouds.
As followers of Christ, we are called to be light in this dark world. God’s Word affirms our identity as light bearers:
You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. (1 Thessalonians 5:5, NIV)
For the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort—for the sake of his good pleasure—is God. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without blemish though you live in a crooked and perverse society, in which you shine as lights in the world. (Philippians 2:13–15)
If we want to be an effective light bearer, we need to be like a flashlight filled with powerful batteries. A flashlight without batteries is useless. In our lives, the Holy Spirit is the battery empowering us. When we are filled with Son Power, we will shine God’s light in the world around us.
Today, ask yourself:
How am I daily shining as a light to those around me?
