Scripture: John 17:3–4, NIV
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:3–4, NIV)
This is eternal life: knowing God and Jesus Christ.
Jesus came into the world to give the world this message. Without him, there is no hope of personal salvation. Those who accept this truth will enjoy a life that will echo into eternity.
Notice he said he brought glory to God by finishing the work God gave him to do. This should be a major goal for each of us. We must discover what God designed us for and find the work God wants us to do.
Just as tools are used for different purposes, you have been designed for a specific purpose. We can be used to bring glory to God if we keep his Word and obey him in fulfilling the mission he has given to us.
Jesus tells us just what that is: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” (John 17:17–18, NIV)
I cannot overstate the importance of being immersed in the Word of God. I have to know the game plan God has for me to be an effective team player. As I am sanctified in the truth of his Word, I gain insight into his plans for the world and myself.
Part of that plan involves being sent into the world like Jesus was sent into the world by his Father. We are on mission—all of us. We are to make Jesus Christ known throughout the world. What a privilege it is to be part of a mission that will help determine the eternal destinies of multitudes of people.
May we develop a heartfelt passion for helping to fulfill the Great Commission!
Today, ask yourself:
How passionate am I about the things that are dear to the heart of God, such as helping to fulfill the Great Commission? How will I ask God to strengthen my resolve?
