Scripture: Psalm 119:18, NIV
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” (Psalm 119:18, NIV)
Scripture has a lot to say about eyes. Where we focus our eyes is important; they can lead us astray or they can keep our attention of the goals God has places in front of us. We are counseled to look neither to the right or the left. Like the runner in the race, we are to keep our eyes focused on the goal.
As we focus our eyes on the Word of God, we will get to know God better:
“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him….” (Luke 24:31, NIV)
God’s Word will communicate with us, and we will recognize the truth he wants us to experience. We will grow to know Christ as he reveals himself to us.
The first step of experiencing all that Christ has for us is coming to know him. Only then do we come to the point, “Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45, NIV)
The concepts in the Word of God are spiritually discerned. We understand as the Spirit enlightens our mind and gives us understanding to properly apply the Word of God to our life.
As we progress in knowing Christ, and the Spirit enlightens our mind so we can understand the Scripture from a practical standpoint, we position ourselves for the next step. We are then ready to be empowered by God’s Spirit. “And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49, ESV)
We become empowered with the Spirit of God when we ask in faith to be filled with him.
To know Christ, it is important to continually be in the Scripture – to comprehend what Scripture has to say – and to then be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Today, ask yourself:
In what way will I open my eyes to God today?
